Plug Data as an Accessible Tool for Teaching Audio Programming to Music Producers and Engineers
- James Malone
You might have seen James' installation set up in the hub at Penn Street recently. Here is some information provided by James on the inspiration behind the project, as well as its intended outcomes:
Undertaking this research project has provided me with insights into the creative flexibility afforded (Gibson, 1979) by object-based programming environments such as PureData/PlugData. These insights have inspired me to broaden the scope of the assignment brief for the Advanced Sound Design module at pointblank. Currently, the first component of the assignment requires students to program a synthesiser, followed by 10 presets with accompanying MIDI demonstrations. This configuration somewhat limits the possible responses to the brief within standard MIDI controlled, pitch-based synthesisers, as each synth is expected to be opened in a DAW and fed MIDI information.
